The Sands Township Recycle and Transfer Station, which is located just south of the office complex on South M-553, is available for disposal of items too large for our garbage truck. The facility is available for Sands residents only (except for Electronics Recycling, which is available to all Marquette County residents) and a fee may apply.

Wednesday 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Thursday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month

Electronics recycling – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the 3rd Saturday of each month

Allowed/Not Allowed Items

The transfer station will accept shingles.

The transfer station does not accept cement or concrete, brush, tires, household garbage, Household Hazardous Items, or appliances containing refrigerant (unless they are tagged and refrigerant has been removed).

If lift trucks or dump trucks/trailers are used for hauling items to the transfer station, they must be unloaded by hand.

*Fees are based on volume/estimated weight. Large items (couches and other furniture with metal inside), items not easily crushed (wood or building materials), or heavier items (shingles or drywall) may be charged more.

Transfer Station Alternatives

** When the transfer station is closed, or if the office is closed and you cannot get a landfill hauling permit, you can bring their garbage to North Country Disposal (906-249-4500) off County Road 492 or Waste Management (906-662-6065) on Baraga Avenue in Marquette. They are both transfer stations that accept garbage for a fee – no permit required. Call for hours, requirements, and pricing.
